The winner of the CIBSE Ken Dale Travel Bursary for 2011 is Anderson Barcellos, who won the award for his proposal ‘Building for the Future; How China and Japan are implementing energy efficiency into their building industry'. The Ken Dale Travel Bursary makes funds available to CIBSE members in the developmental stage of their careers to experience technical, economic, environmental, social and political conditions in another country and to examine how these factors impact the practice of building services engineering.
Mr Barcellos, a researcher at Reading University, used the award to travel China and Japan for four weeks investigating buildings, including offices and schools to evaluate the steps in the design process that are being taken to achieve energy efficiency. He looked at the new approaches and technologies that are being used.
"Beijing is one of the first cities in China to adopt the concept of sustainability. I looked at the first furnished sustainable project within the area which more than 3,000 people have visited to study its design concepts and methods used since it is considered as the most efficient building in the Beijing area," said Mr Barcellos on his travel blog.
He also visited the biggest building research centre in China, which has more than 400 researchers working to find new approaches for sustainable buildings at the same time as how to implement new codes and assessment methods to the public in general.
In Japan, Mr Barcellos visited an environmental complex focussing on sustainability. "Cooling a building with the use of an ice system? It might sound crazy, but with production of 320 tonnes of ice during the night this complex is able to cool the whole building without the use of any other energy source."
